In particular those who have made the ultimate sacrifice, like Sgt. Brent Maher.
Sgt. Maher served with the Iowa National Guard, 1st Battalion, 168th Infantry and his unit was serving in the same area of Afghanistan as my son Rickey, who is also in the National Guard serving with the 2-45th ADT from Oklahoma. He died in an explosion from a roadside bomb.
You can read the story here.
The picture above is from the Fallen Soldier Ceremony held for him in Afghanistan on April 18, 2011 and was taken by Sgt John P. Sklaney who is a member of the 2-45 ADT.
Here are some more photos from the ceremony (also taken by Sgt Sklaney):
Please remember these brave Men and Women in your prayers, they give up so much for us.
My Son Rickey is my hero also, he sacrifices precious time with his Wife and beautiful little Daughter (My precious Granddaughter J!) and risks his life everyday to defend the Country he loves.
Thank-you to all who serve!
We are forever grateful and hold you dear in our hearts!

Thank you for such a moving post, and thank you to your son and your family for their sacrifices for the rest of us.
Thank you for a lovely tribute.
Please thank your son Rickey for his service to his country. Please also thank his wife and daughter for sharing him with us and we appreciate their sacrifice as well.
Thank you for your thoughts on Memorial Day. Beautiful words and photos to honor those who serve.
Please pass along my thanks to your son (and his family) for serving our country. And thank you for sharing such an inspiring tribute. It brings home the true impact of our heroes' sacrifices.
Hi Lisa, thanks for being a American that cares. Thank your son for serving from me and hubster. Our own son (25) says if they ever bring the draft back, he's going to Canada. ( hanging head in shame) My dad was in WWII (navy) as was his brother (army) who was severely injured in the "Battle of the Bulge" and rec'd the purple heart!
I enjoy the tribute and photos, I hope many people stop and read this post. I think sometimes, Americans are too snuggly in their posh comfort zones, and occasionally need a bite of reality in their faces to actually care outside of their own boxes. a blog post such as this is a great way to do that.
Ya know? it needs to be made real TO THEM before some people really get it.
Thanks again to your handsome son, his wife and beautiful daughter for their sacrifices!
Enjoy your weekend!
Susan
Thank-you all for you kind comments!
And Thank-you Susan to your family members who have served as well!
I agree with you that sometimes so many people here in America just get too comfy in their everyday lives to even know how much is sacrificed for their well being. Memorial Day is such an important day, and we should all remember. Thanks again for your lovely comment!
What a great post Lisa. We are so lucky to live in this great nation but sometimes we don't give thought to those serving to protect all that we hold dear. Bless you and your son and his family.
